Teach a consistent request, then make sure someone responds.
Let your dog explore
The AKC's demonstration-based route begins with voluntary inspection of the bell. Reward curiosity and engagement rather than moving a paw onto it.
Follow the product's mounting instructions. This lesson runs alongside normal toilet opportunities; do not wait for a learned signal before offering them.
Demonstrate during outings
Position the bell by the usual toilet-exit door. Sound it as you start each routine toilet outing, keeping that sequence consistent.
Battersea's reward guidance emphasises prompt timing. During introduction, have the reward ready for the engagement you want.
Respond to an independent ring
When your dog sounds the bell without prompting, respond with praise and an outdoor trip straightaway. Continue the same response rather than turning the signal into another instruction they must perform.
Pause when needed
If learning becomes difficult, Blue Cross recommends a break and a rethink before trying later.
Share the response routine across the household. Confirm toileting during the trip. Our hand-target lesson covers a separately cued skill.
