To work out how to set up a hang on back filter, keep the exact unit, new media and matching instructions together. The useful sequence is preparation, placement, the model's own water and startup steps, then an observation of what actually happens. A familiar housing shape is not enough to select that sequence.
If the mounting fit is still unresolved, use the hang-on-back filter comparison first. Keep the product code and regional electrical version when browsing hang-on-back filters.
A worked start: Aqueon QuietFlow LED PRO
The January 2016 Aqueon manual covers CA10-2H, CA20-2H, CA30-2H, CA50-2H and CA75-2H (120 V/60 Hz). Inspect first; do not use damaged equipment, cords or plugs. These are older LED PRO instructions, not today's PRO system.
Unpack the new cartridge and rinse it in cold water. Install it and its biological holster FRONT-forward. Check an assembled pump against figure 4; otherwise follow figures 4A–4C for the pump, hook and cord.
Hang the filter as illustrated. Fill the tank one inch below its top edge. Arrange a drip loop, then plug in: water passes through the cartridge and returns. Top up to the outside bottom edge of the top frame. Activate the cover's LED battery following its diagram.
Compare your unit with the diagrams before continuing. Do not invent an extra housing-fill step, skip a stated step or combine this route with another filter's priming procedure.
Tidal: separate preparation from permission to start
The Tidal 75 product page identifies a removable basket, foam and Matrix media, plus separate flow and intake controls. Its self-priming description does not establish that the pump can run without the applicable water conditions.
The Tidal 55/75/110 manual illustrates the telescoping intake fitted to the pump case, a bottom leveling dial and cord guides. Its initial-media preparation removes outer plastic packaging while retaining the Matrix mesh bag. Rinse the new foam and media under running water; layer foam, any chosen chemical medium, then Matrix without overfilling. Keep this initial preparation separate from later used-media care.
However, its USA safety page includes a portable-fountain-only warning despite the later aquarium instructions. Resolve that application conflict with Seachem for your actual version before operating it. This guide does not authorize aquarium energization from those conflicting passages.
Check the first response and leave a clear next step
Watch the actual first start against the matching manual. Note a missing connection, unexpected behavior or unresolved waterline instead of treating a moving water stream as a completed equipment check. Pause for maker guidance when the arrangement does not match; do not open or modify the motor to make it work.
If the plug or receptacle is wet, do not pull the cord. Disconnect the supplying circuit first, then follow the manual's hazard instructions. Unplug before adding or removing parts.
Later component care belongs in the filter maintenance guide. Startup observations do not establish biological readiness or an animal-stocking plan.
