A dog sweater should suit your dog's measurements and the way you dress them. Start with the opening, coverage and care routine. A zipper, a pull-on neck and a harness-access opening perform different jobs.
Compare zippered and pull-on designs
| Example | Construction | Published care |
|---|---|---|
| Ruffwear Hemp Hound | Full-length zipper, open cap sleeves and additional belly coverage; 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton | Cold gentle wash with mild detergent; hang dry; no bleach, ironing or dry cleaning |
| Kurgo Core | Knitted fleece, neck zipper, hook-and-loop closure and two-way access zipper | Gentle machine wash or hand wash; air dry |
| Canada Pooch Soho | Ribbed pull-on chenille turtleneck; 100% polyester | Spot-clean or wash inside out on a gentle cold cycle; hang dry; do not iron |
Measure for the selected size
Record your dog's neck, chest and back measurements separately. Compare them with the chart beside the selected Pawlivy option. Body measurements and finished garment dimensions describe different things; use the labels on the chart rather than choosing by breed or the words Small and Medium alone.
During a calm trial fitting, look at the neck, front-leg openings, chest and underside. The sweater must allow ordinary movement and access for toileting. Use the dog-clothing measuring guide for the measurement and fit workflow.
Keep harness access separate from fastening
A full-length opening changes how the garment goes on. A neck zipper adjusts access at the head. A harness portal provides a route to your walking equipment; it is not a point for attaching the leash. Match the portal position to the harness your dog wears.
Plan washing before the first wear
Keep the care label with the sweater. The examples above use different washing methods, so follow the instructions for the selected garment. Air drying and hanging to dry are separate from deciding when every layer is fully dry.
