How old is my cat in people years? Start with your cat's actual recorded or veterinary-estimated age, then use one named cat age in human years chart without mixing starting figures from different organizations.
Start with actual age
Start with a recorded birth date or an explicitly estimated age. If the date is unknown, Cats Protection recommends a veterinary estimate. A photograph or youthful appearance does not supply the missing birthday. Keep that uncertainty attached to the age you use.
Use one rough reference
For “how old is my cat in human years?”, the chart below uses the Vets4Pets reference.
| Cat age in years | Vets4Pets rough human-year comparison |
|---|---|
| 1 | 15 (Vets4Pets rough reference) |
| 2 | 24 (Vets4Pets rough reference) |
| 5 | 36 |
| 10 | 56 |
| 15 | 76 |
| 20 | 96 |
In the Vets4Pets rough comparison only, add four human years per cat year from age two onward: for example, eight cat years corresponds to roughly 48 human years under Vets4Pets. Avoid unsupported precision for months or uncertain ages.
Cornell’s December 2016 explanation uses a separate approximation: one year corresponds to 16 human years, two years to 21, and each subsequent year to about four human years. Keep Cornell's starting point (1 → 16, 2 → 21) separate from the Vets4Pets table above (1 → 15, 2 → 24).
Keep stage labels separate
Vets4Pets groups seven to fourteen as senior. Cats Protection calls seven to ten mature and eleven to fourteen senior. These are named schemes, not one universal boundary.
Use the comparison appropriately
Age alone is not disease. New physical or behavioral changes deserve veterinary advice, rather than dismissal as a normal birthday milestone.
Keep a short age-reference note so estimates and sources stay clear:
| Age-record field | What to note for your cat |
|---|---|
| Actual cat age or veterinary estimate | Recorded birth date, or veterinary estimate if birth date is unknown (Cats Protection) |
| Rough human-year reference source | Specify either Vets4Pets rough comparison (1 → 15, 2 → 24, then +4/year) or Cornell approximation (1 → 16, 2 → 21, then about +4/year) |
| Life-stage scheme cited | Specify whether using Vets4Pets (7–14 senior) or Cats Protection (7–10 mature, 11–14 senior); not a health or lifespan prediction |
Use the home care plan for household responsibilities.
