Choose an aquarium air pump by matching the actual air-driven equipment, its depth and airline route, the pump’s outlet arrangement and the exact model’s specifications. A tank-size label alone cannot tell you the air delivered through your chosen tubing and accessories. Finish the comparison by checking the electrical version, supplied parts and any missing information before buying.

Start with the equipment the pump will supply

Write down each intended destination: a named sponge filter, diffuser, air stone or air-driven ornament. Record its model and the maker’s air-supply requirements. A pump outlet, a diffuser and a filter are separate components; a package containing one does not establish compatibility with the others.

Measure the depth of the intended submerged air outlet below the water surface and describe the proposed airline route. Keep those observations with the accessory list. They give a manufacturer something specific to assess when the product page lacks an operating-flow chart or an answer for your arrangement.

Keep these comparison fields separate

FieldWhat to recordWhat it does not establish
Aquarium-size ratingThe named model’s stated aquarium range and units.Litres of air delivered per hour or suitability for particular animals.
Airflow and headThe published flow, head limit, frequency and any stated test conditions.Rated flow remaining available at the maximum head.
Depth and routeThe actual submerged outlet depth and planned tubing and accessories.A universal formula for choosing a pump.
Outlets and adjustmentSeparate pump outlets, their controls and the intended destinations.Independent control through any added splitter.
Parts and versionIncluded versus separate tubing, valves and diffusers; exact electrical label.Approval for mixed parts or a different regional version.

A blank specification is a question to resolve, rather than a reason to substitute a similar-looking model’s number. When comparing aquarium air pumps, retain the product code and source beside every figure.

Read named examples within their own scope

The EHEIM air400 listing distinguishes the family’s outlets: air100 has one, while air200 and air400 have two individually adjustable outlets. It also lists variant-specific diffusers, airline, check valves and a Y-piece for the larger models.

For air400, that page lists 400 litres per hour and an approximate maximum head of 2 m at 50 Hz. These are separate specifications, not a promise of 400 litres per hour at 2 m. The 50 Hz listing also does not establish the electrical version sold in your region.

The Aqueon QuietFlow instructions carrying a 2015 copyright identify models 10, 20, 40, 60 and 100 with separate aquarium recommendations and wattages at 120 V/60 Hz. Those rows describe those named versions, rather than every current pump bearing a similar name.

The instructions specify two separate airlines for models 60 and 100 and say airline tubing is sold separately. Their maintenance section’s “Kits Includes” table concerns separately sold repair/replacement kits. It is not a list proving those parts come in a new pump’s retail box.

The Fluval Q1 product page labels that model for aquariums up to 80 US gal (300 L). Keep that paired manufacturer label as an aquarium rating; it is neither an air-output figure nor an exact conversion calculation.

The same page’s Q-series FAQ identifies connected accessories and plugged air stones as possible sources of excess backpressure. Its output answer directs readers to the model’s instructions. That supports asking about your specific accessories and depth; it does not supply a complete flow curve or a universal accessory allowance.

Finish a usable model-comparison record

Put each candidate on its own row, with its code, regional electrical label, published ratings, outlet controls, intended accessories and included parts. Keep the measured depth and proposed route alongside it. Mark unknown operating flow, connector dimensions or accessory requirements explicitly.

An airflow control and a backflow check valve have different jobs; do not choose one by appearance or assume an accessory name authorizes every placement.

Choose once the documented model and parts answer the comparison questions. Follow the actual equipment instructions for later installation. This purchasing record does not establish dissolved oxygen, filtration performance, biological readiness or an animal-stocking plan.
