To work out how to set up an aquarium air pump, separate three decisions: where the external unit belongs, which air path its instructions allow, and what must be ready before its first start. Use the named examples below with their matching manuals beside you.

If the equipment is still undecided, finish the air-pump selection task first. Keep the actual model, regional electrical label and connected accessories together when comparing aquarium air pumps.

Check before making connections

Inspect the unit, cord and plug; do not use damaged equipment. Match its electrical rating to the supply. Keep electrical connections dry and form the manual's drip loop below the receptacle.

Lay out the pump instructions separately from those for the submerged attachment. For a sponge unit, follow the sponge-filter assembly guide; this page continues with the external air supply.

EHEIM air100, air200 and air400

The EHEIM manual, edition 03.26, requires positioning outside and above the water, never on or over the tank. Prevent falling or movement; it recommends the wall-mounting eyelet.

Cut the specified hose and connect the supplied outlet. For two-port air200/400 using one accessory, follow the supplied T-piece diagram. Never leave a port without hose and outlet. Install the suction-mounted outlet underwater before power. Check water level and drip loop, plug in, then use the control knob for air volume and the outlet adjustment for bubble pattern.

Aqueon QuietFlow: keep its route separate

The 2015 QuietFlow instructions cover models 10, 20, 40, 60 and 100, codes 06995–06999. Set the pump on a flat surface near the aquarium. This wording does not establish permission for below-water placement.

Connect separately purchased airline to the rear outlet, route it through the aquarium's airline braces, and attach the chosen air-driven accessory. Models 60 and 100 require two separate airlines; do not substitute EHEIM's T-piece arrangement. Complete connections and drip loop before power. The manual's replacement-kit table is not a new-pump box inventory.

Resolve valve questions before starting

The Fluval Q-series FAQ warns about back-siphoning below the water level without a check valve. That warning does not override another pump's above-water requirement or supply a complete Q1 installation sequence. Resolve the actual pump and valve instructions together; do not infer valve direction or placement from a different model's diagram.

Observe the first start and stop guessing

Compare the actual arrangement and startup with your manual.

Disconnect before handling parts or maintenance. If the plug or receptacle is wet, do not pull the plug: disconnect the supplying circuit first and follow the manual's electrical-hazard directions.

A visible bubble stream does not establish an oxygen level or a stocking plan. Keep later care with the separate air-pump maintenance guide.
