The best free standing dog gate for a shortlist is a design whose supports, access arrangement and storage requirements match the space you can actually reserve. “Freestanding” describes a configuration; it does not tell you whether the product has a small pet door, needs assembly tools or folds away without removing parts.

Compare the three documented designs below before selecting a size. Start with the route people need to use, then the gate's complete footprint and its manufacturer's animal and location restrictions. A convenient panel width alone cannot answer those questions.

Compare three support and access layouts

Documented configurationSupports and access to investigateSpace or storage question
Carlson Design Paw 2070/2870Two separate stabilizing-leg assemblies and locking hinges; the manual does not document a human walk-through doorway. Both list 41–70-inch width; heights are 20 inches for 2070 and 28 inches for 2870. Obtain the complete support-depth requirement.
Richell Freestanding Small/LargeSide panels and projecting feet; pinned and bolted panel connections.Small: 26.4–40.2 inches wide; Large: 39.8–71.3. Both list 17.7-inch depth and 20.1-inch height.
Richell Pet Sitter Plus 94961, freestanding modeSide panels plus a small pet door; that opening is not a person-sized passage.Freestanding dimensions: 39.8–59.8 inches wide, 18.5 deep and 20.9 high.

These are the named documents' dimensions, not measurements of clear walking space. Sketch the full support outline and your normal route around it.

Choose access before choosing a width

Write down who needs to pass through the location and how often. A barrier with a small pet opening answers a different question from a full-width door for people. If a design would require moving the whole unit, find out what its maker permits and where the unit would go. Do not assume routine lifting or stepping over is the documented access method.

The 94961 manual documents a pet-door lock and bolted disassembly. Its tension configuration has different width and depth limits; do not substitute those dimensions. It is specified for indoor small dogs weighing 6.6–17.6 pounds, with location and floor restrictions.

A door pictured within a panel does not establish that a particular animal can or should use it.

Distinguish adjustable from quick to store

The Carlson manual lists screws and connector bolts for its legs, four locking hinges, and a specified pet-side tab orientation. Those are assembly and configuration commitments, not evidence of tool-free storage. Its warning section prohibits top-of-stairs use and stacking gates; it also requires condition checks. The contradictory child-use statements do not support choosing it for a child.

The Richell Small/Large manual shows disassembly involving screws, bolts and L-shaped pins. Do not describe that as an instant fold. Its scope is indoor dogs weighing 6.6–17.6 pounds, with genuine parts and no top-of-stairs use. Unclear fixing-chart boundaries remain a manufacturer question.

If you plan to store a gate daily, obtain the permitted storage arrangement and its dimensions before buying. Count loose components and consider where the manual and required hardware will stay together. A narrower packed outline is useful only when the documented preparation is practical for you.

Finish a purchase record before ordering

For each remaining candidate, record the exact model and configuration, overall width range, support depth, height, intended passage arrangement and any unresolved door clearance. Add the assembly tools, supplied parts, storage preparation and source of approved replacements. These entries expose different commitments without declaring one design universally best.

Keep restrictions alongside the dimensions: an otherwise convenient footprint cannot resolve an unsuitable location or an animal outside a maker's stated scope.

Use our pet-gate opening and mounting guide for the separate contact and kit checks, and the pet-gate cleaning guide for part-specific care. The pet gate category provides the shopping route; the exact product documentation determines which configuration belongs on your shortlist.
