How much cat litter per month should you buy? Start with the fresh litter your household actually takes from its unused supply for one identified formula, in one consistent unit (such as kilograms, pounds, or liters), over one dated period—rather than relying on a universal weight per cat. Keep initial fills, top-ups and full replacements separate. A bag purchased during the month is not necessarily a bag used during that month.

Use one dated record for one identified formula and unit. This gives you a practical basis for the next order without treating a package’s advertised duration as a measured result in your home.

Separate the first fill from ongoing additions

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra directions specify a 3–4-inch initial fill, adding litter as necessary after scooping, and replacement according to household needs. Those are three different demands on your supply. They do not establish a monthly weight for every cat or tray.

Keep that depth attached to the named product. Do not reduce the instructed fill or postpone necessary replacement just to make a bag match a monthly estimate.

For your record, label fresh litter added to a newly set-up box as initial fill. Label additions between full changes as top-ups, and fresh litter added after emptying an existing tray as replacement fill. Adding another tray can therefore make one month different from an otherwise similar month.

Keep package units and product identities intact

The UK CATSAN Hygiene Plus page lists 5 L, 10 L and 20 L packs. These are volumes. They are not kilogram amounts or a statement that a particular pack supplies every household for a month.

World’s Best Cat Litter’s Ultra Absorb page instead lists 8 lb and 15 lb bags and a 32 lb box. Those are package masses, not your measured monthly use. Its written maintenance directions specify a 2–3-inch depth for that product; do not average this with another maker’s depth.

A manufacturer’s duration or performance claim is also different from your own inventory record. This guide does not report an independent household consumption trial or use the product page’s cats-by-days chart to prescribe an amount.

Choose one consistent unit for the same formula. Do not equate a liter with a kilogram or compare different products by their bare package numbers. If remaining stock cannot be established reliably, record the uncertainty rather than inventing a precise total.

Record unused stock and where it went

Note the period’s start and end dates, formula, cats and trays. Record unused stock at the start, purchases received and unused stock remaining at the end. Keep litter already in trays outside that unused-stock balance.

The following table pairs our illustrative arithmetic example (where every quantity refers to the same formula in kilograms—not a recommended monthly allowance per cat) with a blank household tracking column so you can reconcile stock outflow against tray additions and non-tray losses:

Inventory or destination field (single formula, single unit, dated period)Illustrative arithmetic exampleYour household record
A. Unused stock at the start of the period4 kg[Start stock in one unit]
B. Purchases received during the period10 kg[New bags/boxes added to stock]
C. Unused stock remaining at the end of the period5 kg[End stock still unopened/unused]
D. Withdrawn from unused stock (A + B − C)4 + 10 − 5 = 9 kg (illustrative outflow only)[Total withdrawn: A + B − C]
E1. Tray destination — Initial fill (newly set-up box)2 kg[Fresh litter for new box setup]
E2. Tray destination — Ongoing top-ups after scooping3 kg[Fresh litter added between full changes]
E3. Tray destination — Full replacement fills3 kg[Fresh litter added after emptying trays]
F. Total fresh litter entering trays (E1 + E2 + E3)2 + 3 + 3 = 8 kg[Tray subtotal: E1 + E2 + E3]
G. Separately recorded spill, return, or transfer out of unused stock1 kg (spill)[Spills, returns, or discarded unused litter]
H. Reconciliation check: D − (F + G)9 kg − (8 kg + 1 kg) = 0 kg difference[Difference to verify if D does not equal F + G]

Here, 9 kg left unused stock, 8 kg entered trays and 1 kg was lost. Calling the 10 kg purchase “monthly use” would give a different and misleading answer. Record returns, transfers or discarded unused litter separately too. Do not count wet or soiled waste as the weight of fresh litter added.

Use the record to plan the next purchase

Compare months with similar cats, trays and routines, keeping setup fills and exceptional losses visible. Use the observed additions and remaining stock to plan supplies, then revise the estimate when your setup changes. Do not interpret a change as a diagnosis.

Check the exact instructions when comparing cat litter. Keep the separate litter-box cleaning routine intact; a purchasing record should document necessary care, not replace it.
