To add water to a cat water fountain, identify the exact model, find its specified filling point and water-level instruction, and follow its requirements for power and removable parts. Fill within those limits, then refit and restart it as its instructions describe. A visible puddle in the drinking tray is not a substitute for checking the reservoir’s documented level.

There is no single refill quantity or power-on pouring method for every fountain. Use the actual device’s instructions rather than copying a similar-looking product, particularly when a pump, reservoir or electrical base must be handled.

Find the model and the water-level reference

Read the name on the unit and match it to the manufacturer’s instructions. Identify the reservoir or bowl being filled, the opening used to add water, and the level reference. That reference might be a window, marked limits or a stated gap below a rim.

Keep capacity and fill level separate. A listed tank capacity does not tell you where water should sit during operation.

Read each model’s instruction in its own context

The Catit PIXI Mini assembly guide says to fill the reservoir, view the level through its front transparent window and avoid overfilling. Its written sequence then replaces the fountain top before the later power-connection step.

The same guide warns owners to unplug from the wall socket with dry hands before putting on or taking off parts, or installing, maintaining or handling the pump. Keep that warning with the PIXI Mini; its window is not a license to guess an unprinted level or remove every component during each refill.

PetSafe’s Current Pet Fountain setup instructions use a different reference: leave at least 1/4 inch between the water level and the bowl’s lip. The written sequence then secures the lid and connects power.

That measurement is headspace above the water for the named Current bowl. It is not a 1/4-inch water depth, a minimum pump level or an instruction for another fountain. A setup sequence also does not establish that every part needs removal for routine topping up.

The written tips for PETLIBRO’s Dockstream App Monitoring Fountain PLWF105 say to add water before starting the machine and never immerse its base. Its FAQ specifies water between MIN and MAX and warns against running the pump dry.

Those are that model’s limits, not an amount to borrow for an unmarked tank. Its description of an automatic low-water stop does not replace checking the level. The FAQ also says refill frequency depends on the pet, rather than supplying a universal timetable.

Complete the refill within the documented permissions

  1. Check the required handling first. Find the model’s power and part-removal instructions. If adding water requires moving a part, follow those instructions before moving it; do not improvise a live refill.
  2. Add water at the identified point. Use that model’s actual level reference. Do not pour into an electrical base or assume an outlet, tower or filter opening is an approved filling point.
  3. Refit what was moved. Follow the matching instructions for positioning components and reconnecting power. Stop if a connection or fitting is unclear rather than forcing it into place.
  4. Check the completed setup. Confirm the documented water level and observe whether it operates as described. A full-looking upper tray alone does not explain an unresolved reservoir or flow problem.

If the level warning remains or water does not flow as expected, use the exact model’s support instructions. Repeatedly adding water, guessing a reset or dismantling a pump is a different task from refilling it.

Keep refilling separate from cleaning and drinking advice

Save a short note with the model, refill opening, level instruction and power or component-handling requirements. Another person can then follow the same documented method instead of estimating from the last water line.

Refilling does not complete the separate fountain cleaning and component-care routine. When comparing water fountains, check that these everyday instructions are available for the actual unit. A refill record is an equipment record, not a measurement of how much your cat drank or evidence of a health benefit.
