Teach paws-up through a guided position, an empty-hand gesture and then a word. The box must remain dependable throughout.
Check before practising
The AKC's trick-training guide advises checking physical suitability before a new trick and asking your veterinarian when uncertain.
Dogs Trust requires a safe, sturdy item that cannot slip or fall under the dog. Its starter exercise uses a sturdy box and favourite treats. An ordinary storage box is not automatically suitable.
Teach the position first
Place the item between you and your dog. Slowly lure the paws up onto it with a treat; mark and reward the intended position. Repeat while participation remains willing.
Remove food from the guiding hand
Use the same gesture without a treat in that hand, continuing to mark and reward the position.
Add the word
Following Dogs Trust's next stage, introduce a consistent cue, such as Up or Pose, while continuing praise, marking and rewards.
Blue Cross recommends pausing when learning becomes difficult and reconsidering the task before trying later. Do not push through uncertainty.
The separate hand-target lesson teaches nose contact rather than this supported position.
