Peekaboo brings your dog into a position between your stationary legs. It does not require circling either leg.

Prepare an invitation

Choose another activity if either of you cannot stand or pass comfortably. Never squeeze or trap your dog in the gap.

Have the reward ready. Battersea recommends promptly rewarding the action you want.

Guide into position

The AKC's Peekaboo method starts with you in front of your dog, both facing the same direction. Attract them with a treat, then praise and reward when they come forward between your legs.

Name and reset

After repetitions, say your chosen cue as your dog enters. Use an established release cue, or toss a treat to move them out before another attempt.

Remove the food prompt

Gradually fade the food lure as the dog learns to enter on the spoken cue. Continue rewarding the response.

If learning becomes difficult, follow Blue Cross's advice: pause, reconsider the task and try later.

For a circling movement instead, see our separate leg-weaving lesson.
