Sit pretty retains a sitting position with the front feet raised.
Check suitability
Check physical suitability first; the AKC's trick guide advises asking your vet if unsure.
Begin with support
Following its starter layout, sit in a chair with your dog between your legs, facing away; sit on the floor for a small dog.
Reward the seated lift
Hold a treat a few inches above the nose, gradually raising it to invite front feet off the floor while the bottom stays down.
Have the reward ready: Battersea recommends promptly rewarding the action you want.
Name the learned position
Gradually lengthen a comfortable hold before rewarding, then name the desired position. Once confident, the guide moves practice to a corner against a wall.
Pause or finish
If learning is difficult, Blue Cross advises a break and a rethink before a later attempt. Do not lift the paws or hold your dog upright.
The separate sit lesson teaches ordinary sitting. Do not demand unsupported balance.
