Build carrier practice around responses your parrot can repeat comfortably before adding another challenge.

Prepare familiar skills

RSPCA Australia's step-up exercise rewards voluntary foot contact before both feet transfer. Establish that skill separately before practising carrier exits.

Medical Center for Birds treats nonparticipation as communication: reconsider difficulty, rewards or session length, then stop and revisit later. Apply that check throughout carrier practice.

Approach and enter

Following RSPCA's carrier programme, position the carrier in the same room, at table height away from the bird's usual space. Approach with your willing bird on a hand or hand-held perch, stopping for nervousness. Progress food rewards towards the entrance, then inside; leave the door open. Invite a step-up out. Repeat comfortable entries and exits.

Add closure, then movement

Then briefly close and reopen the door; invite your bird out. Increase closure gradually. Once comfortable, gently lift and lower the carrier. Build movement gradually, returning it before opening and inviting an exit. Move slowly and refresh practice.

Return to an easier stage if willingness changes. This practice does not establish readiness for a particular journey.
