A pet camera privacy mask is a selected region of the image, not a general promise that the camera is private. Start with the area you want excluded, the exact device and the setting that controls it. Then distinguish what you can see in the current picture from what you have established about recordings, sound and older files.

This guide uses documented Tapo and Reolink examples. Their controls and limits are separate.

Identify the camera and the feature first

Keep the model, hardware version, installed firmware and app version with the matching support page. A similar product name or a menu from another camera is not enough to establish support.

Write the intended area in ordinary terms, such as a doorway at the edge of the picture. This gives you a scene reference to check later. A motion-detection zone, a spatial privacy mask, a separate privacy mode, a physical lens cover and turning power off are different states. This article addresses the spatial mask.

Use the documented path for the supported device

For devices covered by Tapo's privacy-zone guide, select the camera's Live View, then Device Settings, Video & Display and Privacy Zones. Enable the feature, use its editing arrow, add a zone, adjust its corners and save. The guide allows up to four zones. Check its full applicable-device list and the support conditions for your version.

These zones belong to the current view. Tapo warns that rotating or repositioning the camera leaves zones active but shifts them away from the original areas. An enabled setting therefore does not establish that the intended doorway is still covered.

Reolink's App instructions use Device Settings, Display and Privacy Mask. Draw the rectangles, save, then return to Live View to inspect them. The maker describes black rectangles in live view and recordings; available zone counts vary with model and software.

Its dynamic-mask beta is limited to RLC-823S1, RLC-823S1W and RLC-823S2 through App or Web configuration. Masks configured through Client or NVR remain static and can offset when the PTZ scene moves. Do not assume every moving camera tracks the original area, or apply the App path to another interface.

Keep a short coverage note

Record the intended scene area beside the actual configuration path. After saving, compare that area with the visible mask in the current view. If the viewpoint changes, revisit the comparison rather than relying on the saved switch alone.

A useful note separates observations from open questions:

  • Device and path: the identified model and versions, plus the app or other supported interface used.
  • Current view: what area the mask visibly covers, and whether the camera moved afterward.
  • Recording: which relevant clip you actually inspected and what appeared there, or that recording coverage remains unconfirmed.
  • Other states: microphone, earlier recordings and separately saved copies, each left unresolved unless independently established.

For finding and inspecting local footage, use the separate microSD recording and playback guide. A mask-setting instruction does not replace the recording workflow or demonstrate its result.

Do not turn a mask into a broader conclusion

Reolink Privacy Mode is a separate feature: on supported combinations, the maker describes live view, alarms and audio/video recording as disabled while power and networking remain connected. Earlier recordings remain playable. Its model, hardware, firmware and app table governs availability, including entries still under evaluation; the general description does not establish support for every camera.

A visible spatial mask alone does not establish that the microphone is off, all recording has stopped, earlier footage was rewritten or saved copies were deleted. Keep those questions separate. For a coverage mismatch or an undocumented state, give the maker your device details and the precise observation rather than assuming a successful privacy outcome.

When comparing pet cameras, check the exact feature documentation before treating a broad privacy label as a product capability.
