A pet camera privacy mask (also called a Privacy Zone) places a solid black rectangle over a selected region of the camera's video frame—it is a spatial image filter, not a whole-device shutdown. Knowing how to set a pet camera privacy mask and verify its real scope means checking four things separately: whether the black box covers the intended doorway or desk in the current view, whether rotating or panning the camera shifts the mask off target, how a spatial mask differs from full Device Privacy Mode, and whether microphone audio or older clips remain active.
Compare Spatial Privacy Masks vs. Full Privacy Mode and Other States
Use this comparison table to distinguish a regional black-box mask from full Reolink Privacy Mode, motion zones, and audio controls across documented Tapo and Reolink guides:
| Feature & Official Source | Supported Path & Model Scope | What It Changes in View or Recording | What Remains Unchanged or Requires Re-Checking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tapo Privacy Zones (Spatial Mask) (Tapo FAQ 4338) | Live View → Device Settings → Video & Display → Privacy Zones (supports up to 4 adjustable corner zones on covered Tapo models) | Blocks the selected rectangular regions of the current camera view | Shifts if camera moves: Rotating, tilting, or bumping the camera leaves the zones active on screen coordinates but shifts them away from the physical doorway or desk. Does not disable audio or erase old clips. |
| Reolink Privacy Mask (Spatial Mask) (Reolink Privacy Mask Guide) | In Reolink App: Device Settings → Display → Privacy Mask (draw black rectangles and save). Dynamic PTZ mask beta applies only to RLC-823S1, RLC-823S1W, and RLC-823S2 via App/Web | Places black rectangles over selected areas in both Live View and new video recordings | Masks set via Client or NVR—or on non-dynamic models—remain static and can offset when a pan-tilt (PTZ) camera moves. Does not mute microphone recording. |
| Reolink Privacy Mode (Whole-Camera Sleep State) (Reolink Privacy Mode Guide) | Separate feature governed by Reolink's model, hardware, firmware, and app compatibility table | Disables live view, alarms, and new audio/video recording while keeping power and network connected | Earlier recordings remain playable; availability depends strictly on the supported hardware/firmware table rather than applying to every Reolink camera. |
Step 1: Set the Spatial Mask on Your Supported Tapo or Reolink Camera
On Tapo cameras (Tapo Privacy Zone guide): Write down the physical landmark you want masked (such as a hallway door or monitor screen), open Live View → Device Settings → Video & Display → Privacy Zones, enable the toggle, add up to four zones, drag the corners to cover the landmark, and save. Because Tapo's zones are fixed to the frame coordinates, any physical bump or pan/tilt rotation moves the lens while the black box stays in its old screen position—always re-check and redraw zones whenever the camera angle changes.
On Reolink cameras (Reolink Privacy Mask guide): Open the Reolink App, go to Device Settings → Display → Privacy Mask, draw your black rectangles, save, and return to Live View to verify placement. Keep static masks distinct from Reolink's dynamic-mask beta (which tracks PTZ movement only on RLC-823S1, RLC-823S1W, and RLC-823S2 when configured via App or Web; Client and NVR masks stay static).
Step 2: Do Not Confuse a Visual Black Box With Audio Muting or Deleted Footage
Drawing a black privacy rectangle over part of the image never turns off the camera's microphone, never stops the rest of the frame from recording, and never alters video clips recorded before you saved the mask:
- To exclude sound from new recordings: Configure your camera's dedicated sound settings using our guide to pet-camera audio recording controls.
- To inspect what was actually saved to local storage: Play back a newly recorded test clip after saving your mask using our microSD recording and playback guide.
Four-Field Privacy Mask Verification Log
After saving a privacy zone, record these four checks so you know exactly what is and is not covered:
- Camera & interface: Exact model, hardware/firmware version, and whether configured via App, Web, Client, or NVR.
- Landmark & movement check: Physical room area covered in Live View, plus a reminder to re-verify if the mount is bumped or panned.
- Recorded clip verification: Timestamp of a new test clip inspected to confirm the black rectangle appears in saved video.
- Separate audio & history states: Whether microphone recording was separately disabled and whether pre-mask footage still exists on the card or cloud.
When comparing options in our pet cameras category, check each model's documentation to see whether it supports static regional masks, dynamic PTZ masks, or full device privacy mode.
