To know how to clean a pet carrier—especially a soft-sided fabric pet carrier—separate the outer bag, plush liner, internal foam pad, stability board, and support rods before touching water. Remove only the components designed to come out, clear loose hair first, and clean each piece according to its own material permission. A machine-washable fleece liner never makes the surrounding mesh panels, foam insert, support board, or arch frame machine washable.
This guide compares documented component care rules from Sherpa, Sleepypod, and Sturdi Products. It covers routine off-animal equipment cleaning rather than medical disinfection, airline compliance certification, or load-rating verification.
Make a Component List Before Disassembling the Carrier
With your pet safely out of the carrier, locate the model tag and manual, then list every removable and fixed component: outer shell, fleece or plush bedding cover, internal foam pad, rigid base or stability board, flexible arch or roof rods, shoulder strap, and mesh windows. Never force open a sewn seam just because another brand's pad unzips.
Assign each part its own wash and drying method. For example, the Sherpa FAQ gives three different rules for its carrier shell, faux-lambskin liner, and stability board, while the Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed page and 2024 manual separate outer-shell damp wiping, Ultra Plush bedding machine washing, and foam-insert hand washing.
| Documented Equipment | Permitted Cleaning & Drying By Part | Keep Separate (Boundaries & Reassembly Notes) |
|---|---|---|
| Sherpa FAQ: carrier, faux-lambskin liner & stability board | Carrier shell: Hot soapy soak and air dry. Faux-lambskin liner: Cold gentle machine cycle and air dry. Stability board: Spot clean only. |
Never submerge or machine wash the stability board; the FAQ does not state a specific water temperature number or soak duration. |
| Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed (2024 manual) | Outer surface: Wipe with a damp cloth. Ultra Plush bedding: Cold gentle machine wash with like colors; hang or lie flat to dry. Foam insert: Hand wash with mild detergent; hang or lie flat to dry. |
No bleach or ironing on the Ultra Plush bedding; hand-wash permission for the foam insert and machine-wash permission for the plush top do not make the outer carrier shell immersible. |
| SturdiBag Pro 2.0 guide & Sturdi FAQ | Prepared inside-out carrier bag: Machine wash with non-bleach detergent and line dry. Removable pad: Wash separately; low-heat machine drying applies only to the pad. |
Remove baseboard, arched and roof rods, zipper clips/pulls, tether, strap, and pad before washing; verify your version's rod reassembly order before disassembly (see the reassembly order conflict below). |
Remove Loose Hair Without Damaging Mesh Panels
Clear dry fur and grit before introducing water, keeping each tool on the surface it is meant for:
- Plush bedding: Sleepypod's 2024 manual permits using a lint roller, vacuum, or tape to lift light fur from the Ultra Plush bedding. Do not press sticky tape across coated exterior panels or delicate mesh windows.
- Hook-and-loop fasteners and interior corners: Sturdi's FAQ recommends vacuuming loose hair and debris and using a stiff brush specifically on hook-and-loop (Velcro-style) strips—keep stiff bristles off ventilation mesh.
Clean the Outer Bag, Liner, Foam, and Board as Separate Jobs
Follow the exact water limit for each part you removed:
- Outer carrier shell: Keep damp-wipe shells (such as Sleepypod's exterior, wiped in the direction of the fabric grain) distinct from soak-permitted shells (Sherpa) or inside-out machine-washable shells (SturdiBag Pro 2.0 after removing all rods, baseboard, clips, and straps).
- Plush liner vs. internal foam pad: Unzipping a washable fleece cover often reveals an inner foam pad. Sleepypod explicitly requires hand washing its foam insert with mild detergent and drying flat or hanging, whereas its plush cover takes a cold gentle machine cycle.
- Rigid base or stability boards: Keep support boards out of soaking tubs and washing machines; Sherpa restricts its stability board to spot cleaning only, and Sturdi requires removing the baseboard before washing the bag.
Keep Drying Rules Tied to Each Component
Never bundle damp parts together or apply a pad's dryer setting to the carrier body. Sherpa requires air drying for both carrier and liner; Sleepypod requires hanging or flat drying for both plush bedding and foam; and Sturdi's Pro 2.0 guide restricts low-heat tumble drying strictly to the separated pad while requiring line drying (away from direct sun or heat per the general FAQ) for the carrier bag itself.
Resolve the Reassembly Instructions Before Reconnecting Supports
Before you pull support rods out of a carrier, record how they fit or photograph each sleeve opening. In Sturdi's published pages, there is an unresolved sequence conflict between two official documents: the SturdiBag Pro 2.0 guide places reinserting the arched rods at the final stage of reassembly, whereas the Sturdi general FAQ states to reinsert the arch rods first. Because neither page carries a timestamp that resolves which order applies to an unmarked unit, check the instructions included with your specific version before removing the rods.
Similarly, for Sleepypod's zippered mesh dome, the 2024 manual instructs unzipping completely and releasing the zipper pin rather than leaving the dome hanging from a partial zip, then seating the pin squarely into the zipper box during reattachment.
Inspect the Reassembled Carrier and Log Component Rules
Once every part is completely dry and reassembled according to its manual, check zipper travel, mesh seams, and base support stability while the carrier is empty. Keep a short component care card (model name, removable parts list, wash/dry rules per part, and reassembly sequence) with your travel gear, and browse our cat carriers category when comparing removable-component designs.
After cleaning and reassembly, checking carrier size fit and building voluntary entry practice are separate pre-travel steps. See our editorial policy for how we document manufacturer care rules.
