Most cats do not need routine baths.

Decide before adding water

Cats Protection advises bathing only when your vet recommends it. If brushing or a warm, damp cloth removes ordinary dirt, stop there.

Prepare and wash

Have soft cloths and dry towels ready, with a towel underfoot in the sink or tub. Use shallow warm water, no higher than the top of the legs; never immerse the cat. Following the product's instructions, apply cat-specific shampoo to a wet cloth and gently sponge the fur. Do not substitute human or dog shampoo.

Rinse, dry and stop

RSPCA advises keeping away from the head, especially eyes, ears and mouth, and rinsing shampoo off thoroughly with warm water.

Gently towel-dry the fur, then provide clean, dry bedding in a warm, draft-free place where the cat can finish drying.

If your cat withdraws or stiffens, stop rather than holding them through it.

For dry coat care, use our gentle brushing guide and brushing routine.
