A sand bath is a separate grooming offer. It does not replace the burrowing space in a gerbil enclosure.

Resolve the material first

Blue Cross specifies gerbil-safe sand and warns against chinchilla dust.

PDSA describes using chinchilla sand. Sand and dust are not interchangeable product labels; check the actual material rather than assuming any chinchilla product qualifies.

Offer a shallow tray

The RSPCA's health guide describes a daily offer in a shallow tray. For the material, follow the sand distinction above rather than its alternative dust terminology.

Keep the activity in a quiet home setting; PDSA advises positioning the gerbilarium away from busy areas, noise and vibrations.

Let your gerbils investigate and use the tray themselves. A bath being present is not evidence that every animal has used it.

Remove and inspect

RSPCA says to remove the bath and sieve the sand after use.

Do not treat sieving as permission to keep toilet-soiled sand. Blue Cross says to replace it when gerbils toilet in the bath.

Keep the tasks separate

These guides give no universal filling depth or minutes-per-session figure. Resolve the actual tray and sand instructions before use. The whole-enclosure cleaning routine remains a separate job.
