Set up a gerbil enclosure around burrowing, shelter and reachable food and water.
Check the enclosure first
Blue Cross says a hamster cage is unsuitable for gerbils. Its minimum 100 cm long by 40 cm wide by 40 cm tall applies to two to four gerbils.
The RSPCA housing guide specifies solid glass walls, a solid floor and a secure wire-mesh top. It describes around 50 cm of height alongside 20-30 cm of digging bedding and room to emerge upright.
These are separate recommendations, not dimensions to combine into a new standard. Check the complete bedding and equipment arrangement against the actual enclosure.
Blue Cross recommends a quiet indoor position away from draughts and direct heat or sunlight.
Build the burrowing layer
The RSPCA names rough-grained woodchips mixed with hay for burrow structure, and rejects sawdust and fluffy nesting material.
Check the enclosure's filling instructions before adding the selected substrate. A shallow layer that merely covers the base does not implement the stated digging depth. Reconsider the equipment if the intended fill blocks its openings.
Separate nesting from hiding
Blue Cross describes one shared nesting area for gerbils that sleep together.
The RSPCA describes a dark nest box, ideally with multiple entrances, plus other hiding areas numbering one more than the gerbils.
Plan for an existing compatible group; this setup guide does not teach introductions. One shared nest and additional refuges address different needs; do not confuse the counts.
Fit resources and finish
Provide continuous fresh water in a metal-sipper bottle. The RSPCA diet guide advises daily checks for leaks and blockages.
Blue Cross lists suitable food, a sand bath, chewing opportunities and plastic-free toys among the initial supplies.
Install the actual bottle fitting and accessories according to their instructions. Leave access for refilling and clear routes to resources. Close the enclosure as instructed; resolve missing fittings or unclear support arrangements before move-in.
The three linked general guides do not supply model-specific assembly instructions. Keep the particular equipment instructions with your setup. Our bottle-checking guide covers that equipment task; later maintenance belongs in gerbil-enclosure cleaning.
