Plan the usable levels, retreats and resources before your chinchillas move in.

Choose the space and position

PDSA prefers a large indoor enclosure or a dedicated room. For a cage, its stated minimum is 2 m high, 2 m wide and 1 m deep.

The RSPCA housing guide calls for a quiet, dry, ventilated position without draughts.

Temperature advice differs: PDSA gives 10-15 C; the RSPCA gives 10-18 C. Keep the enclosure out of direct sunlight.

Keep those recommendations attributed rather than averaging them. Check the actual enclosure's space and location before buying accessories; an outside measurement alone does not establish a usable interior.

Plan levels without long drops

Both guides limit uninterrupted falls to 60 cm. Arrange platforms and branches at different levels; a tall enclosure does not require an open drop through its full height.

The RSPCA describes mesh flooring alongside solid alternatives. PDSA also calls for solid standing space.

Follow the particular platform and attachment instructions. Inspect the route down as well as the route up before filling the enclosure. Resolve uncertain supports with the maker rather than improvising a repair.

Prepare retreats and materials

PDSA recommends a nest box per chinchilla, a large shared box and a spare. Use clean, dry, dust-free hay.

Avoid cotton-wool-style nesting material that separates into thin strands.

Identify which box is for shared rest and which choices let companions spend time apart. Check the particular boxes' access and placement directions before fastening them into the arrangement.

Fit resources and close

The RSPCA behaviour guide calls for easy access to food, water, a dust bath, hiding and resting areas, with undisturbed daytime sleep.

Keep those routes usable after all accessories are fitted. For bottle equipment, our flow and leak checks cover that separate task.

Close the enclosure as its instructions require, complete any unresolved fittings and have the existing care supplies ready before collection. These general welfare guides do not provide assembly instructions for an unidentified cage.
