Practise approaching the scales separately from taking a reading, so the weighing surface becomes familiar.

Encourage a willing step onto the scales

RSPCA's bird-training guide recommends weighing weekly on electronic kitchen scales at the same time of day. Let your parrot get used to seeing them. Move favourite-food rewards gradually from nearby onto the scales, allowing the bird to step on and eat.

Account for a familiar stand

If your parrot prefers a familiar tabletop perch, weigh it empty, then subtract that weight from the combined reading. Keep the stand's weight with your notes.

Use the separate scale operating guide for model-specific zero, tare and displayed units.

Pause an unsuccessful attempt

Medical Center for Birds advises reconsidering difficulty, rewards or session length when a bird does not participate, then stopping and returning later. Apply that voluntary approach rather than holding your parrot on the scales.

Record and respond

Record the result, time and any stand deduction. Report weight changes to your veterinarian.

RSPCA Australia explains that a bird may look healthy despite illness; physical assessment belongs with an avian vet. A weight reading cannot clear a bird of disease.
