Use the camera's documented audio-recording control when you want sound included in, or excluded from, its recordings. Keep that choice separate from whether you can hear the phone, speak through the camera or see a privacy mask. Those observations do not establish the same device state.

The examples here concern supported Tapo, older specified Wyze and Reolink controls. They do not establish that a physical microphone is disconnected, that every live stream is silent or that an earlier file has changed.

Identify the camera and the intended recording state

Start with the exact model, relevant hardware or firmware details and the app's matching support instructions. Select the intended camera if several devices appear in the account. Decide whether your question concerns future audio capture, live listening, a particular existing clip or speaking through the camera.

A control for starting an event when sound is detected answers a different question from whether a recording contains audio. Likewise, the phone's listening or volume state is not evidence that the camera stopped capturing sound. Record the actual control name rather than shortening all these states to "mic off."

Tapo: find the recording control

For a matching camera and app, Tapo's audio guide places Record Sound under Device Settings, then Storage & Recording. Choose the intended toggle state. The maker says that when it is off, the camera does not capture audio during recording.

The same guide separately discusses microphone sensitivity and two-way conversation. It says recorded sound includes the surroundings and visitor's voice, while sound emitted from the camera speaker, including the app user's voice, is filtered to prevent feedback. A conversation heard through the device is therefore not proof that both sides were saved in the recording. Check the matching product documentation instead of applying the page's entire troubleshooting sequence.

Wyze: retain the older guide's model scope

Wyze's Advanced Settings Menu guide, updated in May 2023, explicitly names Cam v1/v2 and Pan devices. Select the camera in the Wyze app, open its Settings gear and then Advanced Settings.

Its Record Sound section says audio is recorded with video by default and directs owners to set the toggle to Off when they do not want audio recorded. Use that documented control for the intended state on the covered device. This older page does not establish identical controls for Cam v3, v4 or every later Pan model.

Reolink: separate recording from live listening

The overall applicability of Reolink's recording and live-audio guide excludes RLC-423, RLC-423S and RLC-423WS. For applicable cameras in the App, use Device Settings, Sounds and Record Audio. The maker says disabling that option excludes audio from video recordings.

Its effect on live-preview audio varies by camera and firmware. The live-view Speaker control separately governs listening, so a muted preview and disabled recording are not interchangeable observations. The article also has distinct Client, Web and NVR sections with their own conditions. Do not transfer the Web subsection's exclusions or another interface's buttons to the App route.

Keep a useful state note

After choosing the supported setting, keep four short entries:

  • Device: the identified camera, versions and matching instructions.
  • Capture control: its exact name, selected state and when you changed it.
  • Actual observation: the particular live view or new recording inspected, its time and what you heard, or that no listening check was made.
  • Unresolved scope: live streams, older clips and separately saved copies that the observation did not establish.

Hearing nothing in one player does not by itself establish why it was silent. If the setting or result differs from the matching instructions, give the maker the device details and that precise observation rather than assuming a microphone fault.

Use the separate microSD recording and playback guide for locating local footage. A spatial privacy mask answers a different image-coverage question. Neither workflow establishes that an audio setting rewrites earlier recordings or removes saved copies.

When browsing pet cameras, compare the exact recording controls in each product's documentation. A general microphone or two-way-audio feature label does not settle the capture state you need.
