When planning how to set up an automatic litter box, identify the exact model and check every cat's eligibility first.

Check cats and kit

PetSafe's SmartSpin age advice requires leaving it unplugged until the cat is six months old.

Its Simply Clean setup guide separately leaves the unit unplugged for kittens younger than six months.

Whisker's LR4 automatic-mode minimum is 3 lb. That weight rule does not replace another model's age restriction.

Resolve unknown age, weight or permitted mode before operating. Account for the supplied kit and matching instructions; a similar-looking machine or familiar product-family name is insufficient.

Keep cats away throughout installation and the initial checks.

Follow one installation route

SmartSpin's setup guide installs legs, bracket and lined drawer; keep the liner clear of sensors. Assemble the labeled sphere parts and cover in the documented order, retaining the alignment tool. Loosely insert all eight sphere screws in a star pattern before tightening by hand. The back latch must align even if it appears to lock. With nothing inside, power on and await the self-check until the sphere returns to its starting position. Lightly hold Cleaning three seconds for A/Add Litter Mode, fill to MAX, then press/release to exit. Confirm its compatible litter type with the manual or maker before loading; this page only says high-quality litter.

Simply Clean's guide joins bowl/base, guard and conveyor in its written order. Connect the red conveyor cable as directed before securing the conveyor and cover. Line and seat the waste bin; its carbon filter's white face points toward the cover. Fill with clumping, scoopable clay litter to MAX, excluding litter containing baking soda. Then connect the power adapter. The guide describes a green indicator and immediate bowl rotation.

LR4 arrives assembled. Use a firm, level, cool/dry location without pushing it against a wall or into a corner. Wrap the liner over the drawer perimeter and push the bag into its bottom. Spread compatible clumping litter slightly below the raised fill line. Connect supplied power and press/release Power. Power-on begins a clean cycle; blue-ready does not mean nothing will move.

Finish or resolve the setup

Keep an unfinished setup unavailable if eligibility, components, litter or the initial check remains unresolved. Tell the maker the model, affected step and observed display. Do not guess a reset or use an animal or object to test protection.

For separate decisions, see cat, model and mode eligibility, usable size and placement, and continuing component care.
