To share PetSafe FreshFeed feeder controls—or learn how to share PetSafe FreshFeed feeder access and remove a caregiver later—use the documented sharing menu inside the Pet Companion app for the PetSafe FreshFeed Refrigerated Pet Feeder. In this specific system, a shared user receives full access to control the feeder, including adding or editing meal schedules and triggering manual feeds, but cannot share access onward to anyone else.
Keep those permissions tied to the PetSafe FreshFeed and Pet Companion app rather than assuming every automatic feeder works the same way, and track the sent invitation, the recipient's confirmed access, and any later removal as three separate steps.
Grant and remove the documented FreshFeed access
PetSafe's FreshFeed sharing and unsharing guide requires the recipient to install the Pet Companion app and create their own account first. Once connected, shared users have full feeder control—including creating or changing meal schedules—while onward sharing remains restricted to the primary owner.
Send the invitation
- Select the intended FreshFeed unit from the product list in the Pet Companion app.
- Tap the top settings icon, then choose Share Device.
- Select text message, email, or Copy Sharing Link (or tap More for additional sharing options available on your phone).
When using Copy Sharing Link, the app asks how many times the link may be used before it expires, up to 20 uses. Keep that figure clear in your notes: 20 is the maximum link-use count before expiration, not a 20-person household limit or a 20-day sharing window.
End one person's access
To revoke access, open that feeder's settings in Pet Companion and go to Share Device > Sharing Management, then select the user:
- Immediate removal: Tap Unshare.
- Scheduled end date: Tap Validity Period > Valid Within, pick the end date, and tap Done so access ends after that date.
Repeat the process for any additional shared users you want to update.
Keep sending separate from acceptance
The published instructions show how the owner sends or copies an invitation link without depicting the recipient's exact acceptance screen or button. Have the recipient sign in to their own Pet Companion account and follow the prompt shown by the invitation link they receive, rather than guessing a button from another brand's app.
Log what each person actually sees in their app. Sending a text, email, or copied link does not, by itself, prove that the recipient accepted the invite or can view the feeder. If the feeder does not appear in their account, keep the handover marked as pending rather than assuming shared care is active.
Agree who will use app Feed
PetSafe's FreshFeed extra-meals troubleshooting guide explains that tapping Feed in the app dispenses an extra meal immediately without replacing or skipping the next scheduled meal—the programmed schedule still runs as normal. If unexpected meals occur, PetSafe directs owners to inspect Meal History for manual app feeds triggered by shared users and to remove a user under Sharing Management if needed.
Before a pet-sitting handover begins, agree on who is allowed to edit schedules or tap Feed, and never press Feed just to test whether an invitation worked. Remember that a log line in Meal History and physically observing your pet eat are separate checks.
Use user removal rather than a Factory Reset shortcut
The FreshFeed settings article separates user-level sharing management from Factory Reset. Running a Factory Reset unbinds the feeder from the app and wipes its settings back to factory defaults, requiring full setup from scratch—it is never the routine method for removing a single shared caregiver.
Close the handover with a four-stage status record
Use the status table below to track invitations, link-use limits, active access, and removal dates clearly:
| Handover stage | What to record for this FreshFeed unit | Boundary not to confuse |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Invitation sent & link-use limit | Delivery method (text, email, or Copy Sharing Link) and the selected link use count (up to 20 uses before link expiry). | Up to 20 uses is a link-redemption counter, not a 20-day validity timer or proof that the recipient opened it. |
| 2. Confirmed recipient access state | Whether the recipient signed in to their own Pet Companion account and confirmed the FreshFeed unit is visible (with full schedule/Feed access, no onward sharing). | Do not tap Feed to test access, as app Feed dispenses an extra meal without skipping scheduled meals. |
| 3. Removal action taken | Path used under Settings > Share Device > Sharing Management: immediate Unshare vs. Validity Period > Valid Within > [End Date] > Done. | Use Sharing Management to remove a person; do not use Factory Reset, which removes the feeder from your own app. |
| 4. Observed app result | The user list state currently shown under Sharing Management and any review of Meal History. | Keep login passwords private and record any app-screen discrepancy if a user still appears after Unshare. |
