On a supported pan-and-tilt pet camera, learning how to save and recall pet camera presets lets you request a previously chosen viewing position, while keeping saving, recalling and inspecting the returned live view as three separate stages. A saved label or thumbnail does not establish that your pet's resting area is currently in frame.
Start with the exact camera and its app instructions. The examples below distinguish Tapo marks and Reolink presets from automatic scanning; they do not establish preset support for every movable camera.
Choose the view before saving it
Identify the model and any hardware, firmware or regional conditions in its support information. Use the controls available for that device rather than assuming every pan-and-tilt camera also has optical zoom or the same preset menu.
Describe the intended view with ordinary scene landmarks: for example, the bed and the edge of the doorway. Keep this description with the saved point so you have something concrete to compare after recall. For the earlier placement and access task, use our separate pet camera setup guide.
Tapo: mark the current direction
TP-Link's US pan-and-tilt guide uses Tapo C200 as its example and supplies an applicable-device list. Check the actual product's hardware and support information; the list is not permission to use the flow on every Tapo or Kasa camera.
In the Tapo app, open Home, select the camera's model card and enter Pan & Tilt. The text describes marking the current position, then tapping the mark to rotate back toward that direction. Use the matching documented control without assuming a particular icon, naming field or number of available marks. The guide separately describes one-pass horizontal or vertical patrol, which is a different action.
Reolink: save a named preset and recall it
For models on Reolink's explicit applicability list, open the camera's Live View and PTZ control. Aim at the intended area using the controls supported by that model. Open Preset, choose Add, enter a name and use Confirm to save.
The guide says a snapshot accompanies the point and that tapping a saved preset moves the camera to that point. Treat the name and snapshot as references to the saved position, then inspect the actual current image. This App flow does not establish an automatic home position, a particular recall accuracy or equivalent Client and NVR buttons.
Keep automatic scanning separate
Wyze's February 2021 Pan Scan guide describes the named Wyze Cam Pan repeatedly moving and pausing at waypoints until scanning is turned off. It expressly excludes fixed Cam v1/v2/v3 devices. This is an automatic scan, not evidence of a manual preset-recall route for every later Pan model.
The page also says Motion Tracking can take the camera away from those waypoints before scanning resumes. Enabling Pan Scan disables a Detection Zone, which the page says must be re-enabled afterward. Do not treat scanning or tracking as simply holding one selected view; this guide does not walk through enabling them.
Compare the recalled view with the saved intention
A manual preset or position mark is a saved directional reference you request on demand, whereas automatic scanning (such as the February 2021 Wyze Cam Pan waypoint scan) or motion tracking actively rotates the camera and can move the lens away from your target view. Because a saved thumbnail only shows what was framed when the point was created, use a single-recall verification log to compare the saved landmarks against the live frame after tapping recall:
| Verification Field | Blank Record Template (Copy for Each Preset) | Worked Single-Recall Example |
|---|---|---|
| Device & app route | Model, hardware/firmware version, and app menu used | Supported pan-and-tilt camera via App Live View → PTZ / Preset menu |
| Saved reference & target landmarks | Preset name/mark + two fixed room landmarks that should appear in frame | Preset Pet Bed Corner: full oval pet bed + lower-left edge of hallway doorway |
| Single-recall live observation | In frame (matches saved landmarks) / Shifted (describe missing landmark) / Unchecked |
In frame: both the full pet bed and the lower doorway edge are visible in the live view after recall (mark Unchecked until live view is inspected) |
| Pan Scan / patrol status | Off / On / Not supported on this model |
Off (on Wyze Cam Pan per the February 2021 guide, enabling Pan Scan rotates between waypoints and disables Detection Zone) |
| Motion Tracking status | Off / On / Not supported on this model |
Off (if On, movement can rotate the camera away from the recalled position) |
If the current scene does not match, note the device details, selected point and observed difference in your camera log. Do not infer that a preset guarantees exact positioning, uninterrupted coverage or return after a restart.
A spatial privacy mask has its own view-dependent limits. Saving or recalling a position does not establish that the intended area is still masked. When comparing pet cameras, confirm the exact preset feature rather than relying on a general pan-and-tilt label.
