The best place to donate dog toys is an animal shelter or rescue whose current wish list accepts the particular toys you have. Start with an organization you can reach or ship to, then check its donation page before packing anything. Some accept only new toys; others name certain lightly used items. A toy your dog ignored does not automatically qualify for either category.

Keep the recipient's instructions beside your item list. This lets you separate a useful donation from something the organization cannot use, and avoids buying a replacement toy simply because it looks suitable.

Find a recipient through its own donation page

Search for a nearby shelter or rescue by name, followed by “donate supplies” or “wish list.” Open the organization's own website and look for a specific toy list, condition requirements and a delivery route. A general invitation to support animals is not confirmation that every kind of used toy is wanted.

Online wish lists can provide another route: buy the requested item and have it sent through the organization's listed process. Check that you are using the intended organization's link and the current destination. A donation page may offer different lists for different centers or programs.

The examples below were checked on October 12, 2026. They illustrate different rules, rather than a nationwide acceptance standard. Recheck the linked page before buying, shipping or making a trip.

OrganizationWhat its page says about toys
Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce CountyAccepts new toys made for animal use. Its approved list includes large, XL and XXL Kong toys and specified other toy types; homemade pet toys and human stuffed animals are excluded.
Humane ColoradoLists large, durable dog toys that are new or lightly used. It asks donors to send items from its needs list and provides donation locations and center-specific wish lists.
Humane Society of Greater MiamiNames Kongs or hard durable plastic chew toys under gently used, washable supplies, while listing general durable, washable pet toys under new items only.

Read the organizations' original Tacoma donation rules, Humane Colorado supply list and Greater Miami wish list. Their names on this page do not mean they endorse Pawlivy.

Describe the actual toy, not just “a bag of toys”

Before contacting a recipient, make a short inventory: toy type, size, quantity, whether it has been used, and its current condition. Mention visible damage, missing parts or unknown materials instead of describing the whole bag as good condition. Keep new, unused items separate from items a dog has played with.

A useful question is: “I have two lightly used, washable hollow dog toys of this size. Does your current list accept them, and do you have preparation instructions?” Include a photograph if the organization asks for one. This is more precise than asking whether it accepts donations in general.

If a page says new toys only, cleaning a used toy does not change its history. If a particular type is not named, ask before including it. A rule for one organization's hard toys does not establish acceptance of rope toys, plush toys or every other chew toy.

Confirm preparation and delivery before packing

Follow the toy's own care instructions and the recipient's requirements together. Do not invent a bleaching, boiling or dishwasher procedure to make a toy “shelter safe.” For material-specific care considerations, see our guide to washing dog toys; washing advice is separate from donation approval.

Confirm the drop-off point or shipping address and any appointment or opening-hour requirement. The correct entrance for donations may differ from an adoption entrance, and a multi-center organization may want deliveries sorted by location. For a larger collection or group drive, get the current list before asking people to contribute.

If your toys are not accepted, change the plan

Keep the items while you ask another recipient about its own rules. Do not leave an unapproved bag outside a shelter or add rejected toys to an accepted batch without mentioning them. If you want to buy something instead, use the recipient's current list to choose the type and size first. Our dog chew-toy category can help you explore formats, but a catalog listing does not prove a particular shelter accepts it.

The final check is straightforward: the recipient wants this item, accepts its actual condition, and has explained where and how to receive it. Once those details match, pack only the confirmed items and keep the original instructions available.
